Magical creatures are classified by the Ministry of Magic according to how dangerous they are:
XXXXX = Known wizard killer / impossible to train or domesticate
XXXX = Dangerous / requires specialist knowledge and skill
XXX = Competent wizard should cope
XX = Harmless / can be domesticated

Acromantula XXXXX
This eight-eyed spider originated in Borneo and has thick black hair that covers its entire body as well as the power of speech. Females are bigger than males and lay up to one hundred eggs at a time. Acromantula eggs are defined as Class A Non-Tradeable Goods by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. Believed to be bred by wizards and used to guard various wizard dwellings and treasures it is still untrainable and highly dangerous
Ashwinder XXX
Created when a magical fire burns for too long, this grey serpent leaves a trail of ash wherever it goes. Although it only lives for one hour, it uses this time to seek a secluded place in which to lay its eggs. These eggs give off intense heat and if they are not found, will ignite the dwelling in which they reside. Thus, the eggs must be found and frozen with a suitable charm. Once frozen they are valuable as a component of the love potion.
Augurey (The Irish Phoenix) XX
Native to Britain and Ireland, this thin, mournful looking bird resembles a small underfed vulture. Greenish black in colour, it is extremely shy and nests in brambles and thorn. It eats insects and fairies and when not flying in heavy rain, hides in its tear-shaped nest. The augurey has two uses; it sings at the approach of rains and so is a useful weather predictor and its feathers repel ink and are therefore often used for making quills.
Basilisk XXXXX
This brilliant green serpent originated from hatching a chicken egg beneath a toad. The male has a scarlet plume on its head though both males and females can kill by looking directly into the eyes of its victim. Capable of living for hundreds of years the basilisk feeds off mammals, birds and most reptiles.
Billywig XXX
This insect is native to Australia and is half an inch long and vivid sapphire blue in colour. This speedy insect is difficult to spot due to the velocity at which it travels, using the wings that rotate on top of its head. At its base is a long sting and those unlucky enough to make contact with it will suffer giddiness followed by levitation. Dried billywig stings are used in many potions and thought to be a component of the popular sweet Fizzing Whizbees.
Bowtruckle XX
The bowtruckle is a tree-guardian found mainly in the west of England, southern Germany and certain Scandinavian forests. They are approximately eight inches in height, eat insects and live in trees whose wood is of wand quality. They look like miniature stickmen and essentially harmless, though if they feel threatened they will use their sharp fingers to claw at the eyes of their victim.
Bundimun XXX
Skilled at creeping under floorboards and behind skirting boards they infest houses. They are associated with a foul stench of decay and ooze a secretion that rots the foundations of the dwelling it resides in. It resembles green fungus with eyes and when alarmed it will scuttle away on numerous spindly legs.
Centaur XXXX
The centaur has a human head and torso but the body of a horse. This intelligent, forest-dwelling creature is shrouded in mystery and generally mistrustful of wizards and muggles alike. They live in herds ranging from ten to fifty members and adept at healing, divination, archery and astronomy.
Chimaera XXXXX
This Greek monster has a lions head, goats body and a dragons tail. These creatures are vicious and bloodthirsty, thus have a rating of XXXXX. Chimaera eggs are Class A Non-Tradeable Goods.
Chizpurfle XX
These tiny parasites are crab-like in appearance, with large fangs. Attracted by magic, they infest the fur and feathers of other magical creatures such as Crups. They may attack magical objects such as wands, or feed on the remains of potions in cauldron-bottoms. Most infestations can be dealt with without the need for expert help.
Clabbert XX
This tree-dweller is found mainly in the southern states of America. It has smooth, hairless skin, mottled green in colour and have webbed hands and feet. In addition to this, they have long and supple legs allowing them to swing between branches. The head has short hornsand a wide mouth; it feeds mostly on birds and lizards. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of this creature is the pustule central to the forehead, which signals danger by flashing red.
Crup XXX
Originating in southeast England it resembles a Jack Russell terrier with the exception of its forked tail. It is most likely wizard created due to its loyalty to the magical race and ferocity to Muggles. It will eat almost anything and it is worth noting that Crup owners are required to have the tail removed from their pet to prevent Muggles noticing.
Demiguise XXXX
Found in the Far East, this beast becomes invisible when threatened. It is generally peaceful and herbivorous and resembles a graceful ape with large, black, doleful eyes and a body covered in fine, silvery hair. The hair of the demiguise can be spun into invisibility cloaks.
Diricawl XX
Originating in Mauritius, the Diricawl is a plump, flightless bird that can vanish in a puff of feathers and reappear elsewhere.This species was known as the Dodo by Muggles, though due to its vanishing ability, they believed that it became extinct.
Doxy XXX
This creature has a minute human form covered in thick black hair and has two pairs of arms and legs. Doxys have thick, shiny wings and are found mainly in northern Europe and America. They lay up to five hundred eggs and bury them until they hatch two to three weeks later. Doxys also have a row of sharp, venomous teeth.
Dragon XXXXX (Ten Breeds)
Antipodean Opaleye: Native to New Zealand and unusually lives in valleys rather than mountains. It is of medium size and has iridescent, pearly scales and glittering, multi-coloured, pupiless eyes. It has a pleasant temperament and only kills when necessary.
Chinese Fireball: Scarlet and smooth-scaled, this dragon has a fringe of golden spikes around its face and protuberant eyes. It produces a mushroom-shaped flame and weights 2-4 tonnes (medium). Females are larger than males and the eggs are crimson and speckled with gold. This dragon has an aggressive nature but is more tolerant of its own species than most dragons, often consenting to share its territory with up to two others. It feeds on pigs and humans.
Hebridean Black: This dragon requires plently of territory (up to a hundred square miles) and is thirty feet in length with rough scales and purple eyes. It also has a line of sharp ridges on its back and a spike-tipped tail. It has bat-like wings and feeds on deer, dogs and even cattle.
Hungarian Horntail: Supposedly the most dangerous of the breeds, this dragon is lizard-like with black scales, yellow eyes, bronze horns and coloured spikes protruding from the tail. It has one of the longest fire-breathing ranges (up to fifty feet) and its eggs are cement-coloured and hard-shelled. The young use their tails to club their way out.This dragon feeds on goats, sheep and humans.
Norwegian Ridgeback: This dragon resembles the horntail in many respects though rather than a spiky tail it has jet-black ridges along its back. These dragons breathe fire at a very young age relative to other dragons and will feed on land mammals and water-dwelling creatures.
Peruvian Vipertooth: This is the smallest breed of dragon, only fifteen feet in length. It has smooth scales and is copper-coloured with black-ridge markings. It has short horns and venemous fangs. It feeds readily on goats, cows and particularly humans.
Romanian Longhorn : This dark green dragon has long, glittering golden horns, which are used to gore its prey and are valued in potion making. Aside from its striking appearance, this dragon also happens to be one of those breeds that is in decline, mainly due to the trade of its horns. Thus, the horns are now a Class B Tradeable Material.
Swedish Short-Snout: This dragon is attractive and silvery-blue. Its skin is used to make protective gloves and shields. It has amazing fire-power yet has fewer human killings to its name than other dragon breeds, however, this could be due to its liking for living in uninhabited mountain areas.
Ukrainian Ironbelly: This is the largest of all the breeds ad can weigh up to six tonnes, thus it is slow in flight. This metallic grey dragon with deep red eyes has been known to crush the dwellings on which it lands.
Dugbog XXX
The Dugbog is a marsh dwelling creature found in Europe and America. It resembles a piece of dead wood while stationary, though closer examination will reveal finned paws and very sharp teeth. The Dugbog's favorite food is Mandrake.
Erkling XXXX
The Erkling is an elfish creature which originated in the Black Forest. It is larger than a gnome, with a pointed face and a high pitched cackle that is particularly entrancing to children, whom it will attempt to lure away from their guardians and eat.
Erumpent XXXX
The Erumpent is a large grey African beast of great powen. It may be mistaken for a rhinoceros at a distance. It has a thick hide that repels most charms or curses, a large, sharp horn upon its nose and a long, rope-like tail. The horn can pierce everything from skin to metal, and contains a deadly fluid which will cause whatever is injected to explode.
Fairy XX
The fairy is a small and decorative beast of little intelligence. Often used or conjured by wizards for decoration, the fairy generally inhabits woodlands or glades. Ranging in height from 1-5 inches, the fairy has a minute humanoid body, head, and limbs but sports large insectlike wings, which may be transparent or multicolored, according to type. The fairy possess a weak band of magic. The fairy lays up to 50 eggs at a time on the underside of leaves.
Fire Crab XXX
Despite its name, the fire crab resembles a large tortoise with a heavily jewelled shell. The fire crab has its own defensive mechanism: It shoots flames from its rear end when attacked. Fire crabs are exported as pets.
Flobberworm X
The Flobberworm lives in damp ditches. A thick brown worm reaching up to 10 inches in length, the Flobberworm moves very little. One end is indistinguishable from the other, both producing the mucus from which its name is derived and which is sometimes used to thicken potions.
Fwooper XXX
The Fwooper is an African bird with extremely vivid plumage, Fwooper's may be orange, pink, lime green, or yellow. Though at first enjoyable, Fwooper song will eventually drive the listener to insanity.
Ghoul XX
The ghoul, though ugly, is not a dangerous creature. It resembles a somewhat slimy, but toothed ogre, and generally resides in attics, or barns belonging to wizards, where it eats spiders and moths. It moans and occasionally throws objects around, but is simple-minded and will growl alarmingly at anyone who stumbles upon it.
Glumbumble XXX
The Glumbumble is a grey, furry-bodied flying insect that produces melancholy-inducing treacle, which is used as an antidote to the hysteria produced by eating Alihotsy leaves. They feed on nettles, and live in hollow trees and caves.
Gnome XX
The gnome is a common garden pest found throughout Europe and America. It may reach a foot in height, with a dispropotionately large head and hard, bony feet.
Graphorn XXXX
The Graphorn is found in mountainous European regions. Large and greyish purple with a humped back, the Graphorn has 2 very long sharp horns, walks on large, four-thumbed feet, and has an extremely aggressive nature. Graphorn horn is used in many potions, and their hide is even tougher than a dragon's and repels most spells.
Griffin XXXX
The Griffin originated in Freece and has the front legs and head of a giant eagle, but the body and hind legs of a lion. Like Sphinxes, griffin's are often employed by wizards to guard treasure. Griffins feed on raw meat.
Grindylow XX
A horned, pale green water demon, the Grindylow is found in lakes throughout Britian and Ireland. It feeds on small fish and is aggressive towards wizards and muggles. The Grindylow has very long fingers, which, though they exert a powerful grip, are easy to break.
Hippocampus XXX
The hippocampus has the head and forequarters of a horse, and the tail and hindquarters of a giant fish. Though the species is usually to be found in the Mediterranean, a superb blue roan specimen was caught by merpeople off the shores of Scottland. The hippocampus lays large, semi-transparent eggs through which the Tadfoal may be seen.
Hippogriff XXX
The Hippogriff has the head of a giant eagle, and the body of a horse. The Hippogriff burrows for insects but will also eat birds and small mammals. Hippogriffs lay a single large and fragile egg, which usually hatches within 24 hours.
Horklump X
The Horklump resembles a fleshy, pinkish mushroom covered in sparse, wiry black bristles. Breeding horklumps will cover an average garden in a matter of days. Its choice of food is earthworms.
Imp XX
The Imp is sometimes confused with the pixie. They are of similar height, between 6-8 inches, though the Imp cannot fly, nor is it vividly colored. It is often found near river banks, and eat small insects.
Jarvey XXX
The Jarvey resembles an overgrown ferret in most respects, except for the fact that it can talk. True conversation, however, is beyond the wit of the Jarvey, which tends to confine itself to short, and ofter rude, phrases in an almost constant stream. Jarveys live below ground, and eat moles, rats, and voles.
Jobberknoll XX
The Jobberknoll is a tiny blue, speckled bird which eats small insects. It makes no sound until the moment of its death, at which point it lets out a long scream made up of every sound it has ever heard, backwards.
Kappa XXXX
The Kappa is a Japanese water demon that inhabits shallow ponds and rivers. Often said to look like a monkey with fish scales instead of fur, it has a hollow in the top of its head in which it carries water. The Kappa feeds on human blood but may be persuaded not to harm a person if it is thrown a cucumber with that person's name carved in it.
Kelpie XXXX
This British and Irish water demon can take various shapes, though it most often appears as a horse with bulrushes for a mane. Having lured the unwary onto its back, it will dive straight to the bottom of its river or lake and devour the rider, letting the entrails float to the surface. The correct means to overcome a kelpie is to get a bridal over its head with a Placement charm, which renders it docile and unthreatening. The worlds largest kelpie is found in Loch Ness, Scotland. Its favourite form is that of a sea serpent. International Confederation of Wizards observers realised that they were not dealing with a true serpent when they saw it turn into an otter on the approach of a team of Muggle investigators and them transform back into a serpent when the coast was clear.
Knarl XXX
The Knarl (northern Europe and America) is usually mistaken for a headgehog by Muggles. The teo species are indeed indistinguishable except for one important behavioural difference: if food is left out in the garden for a hedgehog, it will accept and enjoy the gift; if food is offered to a Knarl, on the other hand, it will assume that the householder is attempting to lure it into a trap and will savage that householder's garden plants or garden ornaments. Many a Muggle child has been accused of vandalism when an offended Knarl was the real culprit.
Kneazle XXX
The Kneazle was originally bred in Britain, though it is now exported worldwide. A small cat-like creature with flecked, speckled or spotted fur, outsize ears and a tail like a lion's, the Kneazle is intelligent, independent and occasionally aggressive, though if it takes a liking to a witch or wizard, it makes an excellent pet. The Kneazle has an uncanny ability to detect unsavoury or suspicious characters and can be relied upon to guide its owner safely home if they are lost. Kneazles have up to eight kittens in a litter and can interbreed with cats. Licences are required for ownership as (like Crups and Fwoopers) Kneazle's are sufficiently unusual in appearance to attract Muggle interest.
